A Prayer for 9/11

Today is my birthday.

It was mine well before it was the terrorists’.

It was a beautiful day on Long Island in the late-1960’s.  My Mother and I wore matching sleeveless sundresses and white-rimmed Raybans.

Fast-forward to the Midwest, 2001.  My husband had made pancakes for the three of us and I had just finished my first when the phone rang.  A girlfriend told him to turn on the TV.  He returned to the dining room, his face ashen.  I followed him into the other room and watched as a plane hit the first tower.  I just stood there, hand over my mouth.  Moments later our five year old son came out.  After looking at the looped pictures and seeing our expressions, he asked, “Are we at war?”

I had no relatives or friends in any of the buildings, but I will never forget the rawness and the savagery of seeing people jump from several stories up rather than be engulfed by the flames.  I was stunned at how the buildings imploded on themselves and seemed like a child’s tinker toys, rather than symbols of American strength.  I remember how the ash cloud billowed, spread and congealed on everything and everyone.  I saw the pure pain in the faces we watched day after day, week after week, as photographs of loved ones clogged walls.

Then cheering through tears when I heard about the heroes of the plane that crashed in the Pennsylvania field.  What brave souls they and their families are!  Our country is eternally grateful to them.  More still at the Pentagon and heroes in and out of uniform.  Lord, so much, be with these families all.  I will also never forget our proud president and his personal reaction to his country and the people he loved killed in such a senseless manner.

The anniversary of the worst direct attack on American soil is a day of contemplation, of prayer and of spending time with your loved ones.  It is not a day to be taken lightly, nor to be used for a purpose other than remembrance.  I pray that We the People of these United States of America will come together again, as we did in the months after the attack, one in purpose and one in determination to be the best we can be, to bring our country back to its Constitutional roots, put a ceiling on the blank check Congress thinks it has, and start to pay off our national debt.  I pray that we as a nation would turn back to God with our whole heart, mind and soul and love each other (our neighbors) as ourselves.  I ask that the Lord would help us do this as He helped our forefathers when they founded this country and based the Republic on a moral people.  Would that we’d be that moral people again.  May the Lord raise up Conservative leaders to help accomplish these goals.  And may He keep us safe until His will is complete.

The country is eternally grateful to all those responders who were part of the emergency teams eight years ago.  To all the firefighters, police, EMTs, volunteers, Red Cross, and all others… praise God for you and thank you! And to all the victims and their families, there is nothing that can be said to fully comfort you for your loss.  But just so you’ll know: We will never, never forget.

Today is my birthday.

It was mine before it was theirs.

Now, it is ours.

Only Love and Sacrifice will be enough to tackle these evil forces.
Only the One who loved us unconditionally, even though we chose to separate ourselves from Him.
Only His ultimate Sacrifice of taking our punishment upon Himself in exchange for us — an act of such Love —
is sufficient to pay for the damage of evil in this world — sin we are part of.

There will always be bad things happening because we live in a fallen world (that decision was made back in the Garden).
But we can live in Hope and Joy because the ultimate reward is eternal life with God – Love – the Creator of the universe.
If you believe that God sent His Son to die on a cross for your sins, that God raised Him from the dead and that you want
Jesus to live in your heart forever, you too can have eternal life!  Contact me or go to

“The Obama White House  is behind a cynical, coldly calculated political effort to erase the meaning of the 9/11 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert Sept. 11 into a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry,” Matthew Vadum, senior editor of the Capital Research Center, wrote in a recent article posted on The American Spectator’s Web site. “They think it needs to be taken back from the right” (Pamela Geller, Atlas Shrugs).
